How to Record a Skype Call
Skype is a software application that enables users to place telephone calls over the Internet. Its user-friendly interface makes VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phones calls extremely easy to perform, even for entry level computer users. Recording Skype phones calls is just as easy with the help of an "internet-telephony" compatible recording application.
Download a copy of Total Recorder (see Resources). Save any open projects and close all running applications--Total Recorder will need to restart your computer after the installation process is completed.
Install Total Recorder. After your computer has restarted, launch Total Recorder--the Recording Wizard will appear. Click "Next" on the first page of the wizard.
Select the second option, labeled "Internet Telephony," in Stage 1 of the Recording Wizard. Click "Next" to continue to the next page of Stage 1.
Select your recording device--the headset or microphone you use for Skype--from the drop-down menu labeled "Recording Device." If you will be using speakers for your Skype call, and you would like one speaker to be reserved for your voice and another for the person you'll be speaking with, select "Yes" at the bottom of the menu to separate the voice channels. Proceed to Stage 2.
Select the file format from the list of options in Stage 2--WMA and MP3 are two of the most popular choices because of their quality and high compression level. Click "Next" to continue. Select the quality of your recording on the next page--"Low quality," "Middle quality" or "Near high quality"--and then continue to the next page.
Click the "Change Tag" button to give your recording identifying information, such as "Title," "Year/Date" and "Comments." Proceed to the end of the Recording Wizard.
Launch Skype, then key in your client's number using Skype's keypad. After the call has connected, return to Total Recorder and click the "Record" button in the bottom right corner of the menu. Close Skype. After the call has ended, then click on the "Stop" button in Total Recorder.
Click on the "File" header in the top left corner of Total Recorder and select "Save" from the drop-down menu to open the "Save As" menu. Enter a name for your Skype recording into the "File Name" field and then click on "Save" to store the conversation on your computer.
