How to Record Webcam Sessions on Skype

By David McGuffin

Thanks to Skype, and other VOIP (voice over Internet protocol) programs, you can now make calls for free, or at a low cost, over the Internet. Additionally, by including other technologies such as headsets, microphones and webcams, you can also do free video conferencing by using the same Skype VOIP service. Explore some of the different software available to help you record your video conferencing sessions so that important parts of the conversation are kept and can be replayed.

Things You'll Need

  • Headset
  • Webcam

StickerCam

Step 1

Download the StickerCam application. You can use the StickerCam not only to capture Skype webcam sessions, but also for Yahoo Messenger and CamFrog webcam sessions.

Step 2

Launch the StickerCam application and select the tab labeled "Capture." This will set you up to record the Skype call once it has started.

Step 3

Open Skype and call a friend if you have not done so already.

Step 4

Start recording the webcam by clicking on the "Video in Window" option that is available under the Skype preview. By popping the video into a separate window, the StickerCam will be able to start recording.

Step 5

Click back on the StickerCam where you should still be looking at the "Capture" tab. Select the Skype username from the session list of other webcam sessions. Select the "Start Record" button. When the Skype StickerCam icon changes from a blue house to a green house, that means the session is being recorded. Stop the recording at any time by pressing the "Stop Record" button.

BSR Screen Recorder

Step 1

Download the BSR Screen Recorder. This program can be used as an alternative to the StickerCam.

Step 2

Startup the BSR Screen Recorder program. A window will appear, allowing you to view the default settings for the program. Change the settings if you want a higher quality recording. The BSR Screen Recorder is set to 10 frames per second, but you can adjust it to a higher speed if you want a better recording.

Step 3

Click "Select Source" at the top of the program window. Select how you want the program to record you screen. You may either choose a specific window, a specific area of your screen, the entire screen, or the autopan setting, which records wherever you drag your mouse during the recording..

Step 4

Click the Handycam button to begin recording. Click the arrow on the top-left part of the screen to enable continuous recording.

Step 5

Begin your Skype webcam session once the Handycam is recording.

SkypeCap 2.1

Step 1

Download Skype Cap 2.1.

Step 2

Launch the Skype application and log in.

Step 3

Launch the SkypeCap application. A status bar will appear, telling you whether SkypeCap is ready for video and audio capturing and is connected to Skype correctly. Prior to beginning your Skype call, you can set SkypeCap to automatically start recording at the beginning of your call.

Step 4

Choose an output directory and make a call using your Skype contact list.

Step 5

Hit the "Record" button on SkypeCap if you have chosen a setup other than automatic recording.
