How to Recover an Overwritten Microsoft Word File

Though Microsoft Word is one of the most widely used word processing programs in the world, it is prone to difficulties in compatibility. Though the program can be reliable in saving files, overwriting and losing files is a common problem, and it can be a frustrating one. Recovering overwritten files may be necessary when losing a file to noncompatible programs or when not saving after the file has been edited or altered.

Step 1

Click the "Start" menu on the lower left of your desktop and click "Run." Type "winword /a" without the quotes into the search bar.

Step 2

Click "Enter" and locate the your Word file in the following menu and attempt to open it.

Step 3

Open your Microsft Word application, click "Insert" in the upper menu of your document and click "File." Select your document and select "Insert" to open it in the new file.

Step 4

Find the document saved onto your computer, right click on it and select "Open With..." Locate WordPad and open your document with that application, then copy and paste the new document into a Microsoft Word file.
