How to Recycle an Ink Cartridge for Money

By Diana Braun

Every day, more and more ink cartridges are being thrown out. This adds to the landfills that are already overflowing around the U.S. If you would like to help out the environment and make some cash on the side, you can recycle your old ink cartridges. Local office supply stores such as Staples, Office Depot and Office Max all have recycling programs that will reward you with cash for your used or empty ink cartridges.

Things You'll Need

  • Empty or used ink cartridges

Step 1

Collect empty or used ink cartridges that you, your friends and family have.

Step 2

Visit an office supply store such as Office Depot, Office Max or Staples.

Step 3

Sign up for each respective store's "Rewards" program. The average store rewards $3.00 for recycled ink cartridges in the form of instant in-store savings or a gift card.

Tips & Warnings

  • At Office Depot, you can turn in up to five ink cartridges a day at $3.00 a piece. You must sign up for the store's rewards program to receive payment for your recycled ink cartridges. They will submit payment quarterly via a gift card in the amount you received from your recycled ink cartridges.
