How to Refill Canon Cartridges

By Mark Ritchie

If you change your Canon ink cartridge often, then you are already familiar with the rising costs. The average Canon ink cartridge will cost you approximately $40. If you change your ink cartridge six times a year that is an annual cost of $240 just for printing. You can reduce these costs significantly by purchasing a refill kit. Refill kits cost about $20 and can be reused up to six times. Not only does refilling your ink cartridge save you money, it helps the environment. Ink cartridges are made from nonbiodegradable materials. A tiny ink cartridge can take over 100 years to degrade in a landfill. Refilling Canon ink cartridges is an easy process that is standard among most Canon cartridges.

Things You'll Need

  • Newspaper
  • Thumb drill
  • Refill kit

Step 1

Lay down newspaper around your work surface. Refilling ink cartridges can become messy.

Step 2

Remove the cartridge from the printer.

Step 3

Remove the fill plug located on the top of the cartridge. If a fill plug is not present, drill a small hole on the top of the cartridge with a thumb drill.

Step 4

Insert the syringe into the ink bottle and draw up ink. The syringe and ink is included in your refill kit.

Step 5

Insert the syringe into the ink cartridge and slowly inject the ink until the ink trickles out the hole.

Step 6

Plug the hole with the fill plug that is included with your refill kit

Step 7

Reinstall the ink cartridge and run one to three cleaning cycles, per your printer's instructions.
