How to Register for the Do Not Call List and Stop Getting Calls From Telemarketers

By Techwalla Contributor

If you're tired of getting calls at all hours from telemarketers trying to sell you things like great vacations, you can put an end to it. Since 2003, the National Do Not Call Registry has helped Americans get relief from unsolicited sales calls. Run by the Federal Trade Commission, the system allows you to register online or by phone. So exercise your right to privacy by getting on the list.

Step 1

Call 888-382-1222 from the phone number you want to register. Follow the instructions to register your number. Within 31 days, you should no longer be receiving those phone calls. You can also register cell phone numbers

Step 2

Go to using your Internet browser. Click on "Register a phone number." Enter your information for up to three phone numbers. Then enter your email address and click "Submit."

Step 3

Wait to receive an email shortly thereafter. You will need to click the link in the email to complete the registration. Allow 31 days, and you too will not be receiving those annoying telemarketer calls. The registration is good for five years.

Step 4

File a complaint using the Do Not Call website if you receive calls from a telemarketer more than 31 days after you register. Go to the website and click on "File a Complaint." Make sure you have the name of the company, then read the instructions and follow the prompts.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unsolicited sales calls you receive on your cell phone use up valuable airtime, so registration will be worth your time.
  • Remember that charities, political groups, pollsters and companies you currently do business with are still allowed to call you even if you're registered.
