How to Release the Mouse on a Virtual PC

By Chris Hoke

Virtual PC is a Microsoft Windows program that allows you to create a virtual computer onto which you can load an operating system and run legacy software. If you choose to load Windows XP onto a Virtual PC partition, you may notice a feature where the Virtual PC window will not release your mouse cursor so that you can work outside of the virtual desktop window. You can free up your cursor with a simple keyboard command.

Step 1

Press and hold the "ALT" key on the right side of the keyboard and tap the "ENTER" key to toggle back to window mode if you are currently in full-screen mode.

Step 2

Press and hold the "ALT" key on the right side of your keyboard.

Step 3

Drag your mouse cursor outside of the Virtual PC program window.

Step 4

Release the right "ALT" key.
