How to Remove a Windows Genuine Message

A Windows Genuine message is displayed on machines that are determined to have a nongenuine or illegitimate copy of Microsoft Windows installed. This message will be in the form of a banner that is displayed on the desktop that signifies that the copy of Windows that is installed on your computer may be counterfeit. This message can be removed by first deleting Windows Genuine Notification from your system.

Step 1

Click on the \"Start\" menu and select the “Run” option. This displays the Run window or dialog box. Type “c:\\windows\\system32\\wgatray.exe /u” into the text field and then click the “OK” button.

Step 2

Click the \"Start\" menu and select the “Run” option. Type “regedit” into the text field and then click the “OK” button. Windows Registry Editor opens.

Step 3

Click the \"Edit\" drop-down menu and select the “Find” option. Type “wgalogon” into the \"Find What\" field and then click the “Find Next” button.

Step 4

Right-click the WgaLogon folder and select “Delete” from the context menu. Click the \"File\" drop-down menu and select “Exit” to close the Registry Editor.

Step 5

Click the \"Start\" button and then select the “Search” option. Select the “All files and folders” option. Type in wgatray.exe into the \"All or part of the file name\" field and then click the “Search” button.

Step 6

Right-click the wgatray.exe file and select “Delete\" from the context menu.

Step 7

Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the WGAlogon.dll file.

Step 8

Click the \"Start\" button and then go into the Control Panel. Double-click the icon for the Security Center. Click the “Automatic Updates” option at the bottom of the window.

Step 9

Select the “Notify me but don't automatically download or install them” option. Click the “Apply” button to save the change. Click the “OK” button to close the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • Changing the Automatic Updates option will prevent you from automatically downloading and installing Windows Genuine Advantage.
  • Your system may not function correctly until you install a genuine version of Windows.
  • You should only remove Windows Genuine Advantage when you have a problem upgrading the operating system and you know that your copy of Windows is genuine.
