How to Remove About Blank for Free

A host of different spyware programs can potentially infiltrate your computer system when you navigate to certain websites. Several of those spyware programs make changes to your system, such as setting your web browser's home page to the "About Blank" screen. The most common program that changes your home page is "CoolWWWSearch," but there are many others that could have installed themselves on your hard drive. To make sure you have completely dealt with the problem, you will need to download and use an anti-spyware tool that automatically searches for each of the various malicious programs.

Step

Use a spyware removal tool, such as "Spybot" or "Lavasoft AdAware," (see links in Resources). Download and then install both anti-spyware tools if you do not already have similar programs on your machine.

Step

Restart your computer's operating system. Tap the "F2" button repeatedly while the computer is restarting to bring up the system menu. Highlight "Safe Mode" and press "Enter."

Step

Open the "Start" menu and click "Search." Type "CoolWWWSearch" into the text field. Right click any entries that appear and choose "Delete."

Step

Type "dbbd.dll" into the search field. Right click and delete the file that appears in the search results.

Step

Close the Search box and open up one of the anti-spyware programs. Click the program's "Update" button and wait for the updates to finish installing. Select "Search for Problems." Choose "Remove Problems" when the scan finishes.

Step

Close the anti-spyware tool. Open the second anti-spyware program you installed and repeat the process of updating and searching for spyware software. Restart the computer.

Step

Access your web browser. Click Tools > Options. Click "Main" and then enter in the web address you want to use for your new home page.
