How to Remove Ask.com Toolbar

The Ask.com -- formerly known as Ask Jeeves -- toolbar comes bundled with a wide variety of free software and is installed automatically if you forget to uncheck a small box in the software's setup wizard. In some cases, the toolbar may be installed without your knowledge or consent. To remove the Ask toolbar, remove it from Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, and then uninstall it from Windows.

Mozilla Firefox

Step

Open Firefox, click the Firefox menu button and select Add-ons to view all add-ons installed in Firefox.

Step

Locate the Ask Toolbar add-on and click the Remove button next to it. The toolbar is removed immediately from Firefox, but you must restart the browser for the changes to take effect. Click Restart Now to restart Firefox.

Google Chrome

Step

Launch Chrome, click the Chrome menu button and select Settings to open the Chrome Settings page. Select Extensions from the left pane to view all extensions installed in Chrome.

Step

Locate the Ask Toolbar extension and click the trash can icon next to it to remove it from Chrome. Also click the trash can icon next to the Search App by Ask extension to delete it. Click Remove to confirm and remove the toolbar. Restart Google Chrome for the changes to take effect.

Internet Explorer

Step

Launch Internet Explorer, click the gear icon and select Manage Add-ons to open the Manage Add-ons window.

Step

Locate the Ask Toolbar add-ons in the Ask.com section -- one is the actual toolbar and the other is a browser helper object. Select one of the add-ons and click the Disable button to disable both of them. Restart Internet Explorer for the changes to take effect.

Uninstall From Windows

Step

Press Windows-X to display the Power User menu and select Control Panel to launch the utility.

Step

Click the Uninstall a Program link to see all programs installed on your computer and then click the Publisher column heading to sort the software by publisher.

Step

Locate the Ask Toolbar, Ask Toolbar Updater and Search App by Ask programs and remove them by selecting each one and clicking the Uninstall button. Click Yes to confirm.
