How to Remove Pictures From a PDF Using Acrobat 8 Pro

By Regina Edwards

Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional enables users to edit PDF files by removing objects such as pictures and text from a page. The advanced editing and redaction tools provide flexibility in revising either converted documents or scanned documents. The Object Editing Tool allows objects to be selected and then deleted from a page. The Redaction Tool offers users the function to draw a box around an area or object and replace this selection with a colored box (which can be white). The redacted sections effectively convert to "white out."

Converted PDF Files

Step 1

Open your document in Acrobat 8 Professional and go to the page containing the desired picture.

Step 2

Select "Advanced Editing" under "Tools" in the top menu bar and choose "Touchup Object Tool."

Step 3

Draw a box around the desired picture (note: it doesn't need to be exact, as long as the drawn box doesn't include other objects such as other graphics or text boxes).

Step 4

Press the "Delete" key.

Step 5

Select "Save As" under "File" in the top menu bar to save this version of the PDF (remember to change the document name, if desired before clicking the "Save" button).

Scanned PDF

Step 1

Open the PDF in Acrobat 8 Professional and navigate to the desired page containing the picture.

Step 2

Select "Redaction" under "Advanced" in the top menu bar and choose "Show Redaction Toolbar."

Step 4

Step 5

Click the "OK" button.

Step 6

Click the "Mark for Redaction" button on the Redaction toolbar.

Step 7

Click the "OK" button in the dialog box for "Using Redaction Tools."

Step 8

Draw a box around the desired objects or areas to be deleted.

Step 9

Click the "Apply Redactions" button on the Redactions toolbar.

Step 10

Click the "OK" button to continue with the Redaction command.

Step 11

Choose whether you want to examine the document information in the "Redactions have been successfully applied" dialog box.

Step 12

Select "Save As" under "File" in the top menu bar and type a name for the revised document before clicking the "Save" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • Removed objects and redacted objects are permanently erased upon saving the file. Make sure to save the revised file under a different name so that the original file is still accessible.
