How to Remove Pop-Up Blockers in Windows for Free

By Mitchell White

A pop-up blocker is a program that keeps 'pop-up' windows from coming into existence without your permission. They will often make a little noise to inform you that they have just blocked something. This is helpful when the window being created is unwanted. However, sometimes whatever you're doing online will require the browser to open a secondary window - so that you can fill out an application form, for example. The pop-up blocker on your computer could block this from happening as well, so sometimes it is necessary to remove them.

Step 1

Look in the bottom-right corner of your screen next to the clock. If you have a pop-up blocker active, there should be an icon displayed there. Put your cursor over each icon to find the blocker.

Step 2

Double-click on the icon to open it. There should be an option to exit out of the blocker, which will stop it from blocking pop-ups for the moment.

Step 3

Go to the start menu by clicking on 'Start' in the bottom-left corner. Select "Control Panel'.

Step 4

Click on the "Add/Remove" icon. Scroll down and find the name of your pop-up blocker. Click the 'Remove' button to remove it.

Step 5

Click on the Start menu again and go to 'All Programs' to make sure the program is gone, and to check for any other pop-up blockers you may have. You may also uninstall them from here, by selecting the program and highlighting the 'Uninstall' option from the drop-down menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's also possible to disable pop-up blockers without removing them.
  • Sometimes the Internet browser itself is what is blocking pop-ups, so the problem must be fixed there.
