How to Remove the Redirect Virus for Free

By Mickey Walburg

If you have ever tried to visit a specific website only to find your browser redirecting itself to a different website without your consent, you've probably been infected with a redirect virus. This nasty piece of code redirects your Web queries without your permission in an effort to get you to buy software that doesn't work or click on ads to generate money for the people who wrote the virus. You can get rid of this virus without spending money with the help of some free software and tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Administrator privileges on your PC
  • Internet access

Step 1

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by restarting it, pressing the "F8" key when it starts up and selecting the “Safe Mode with Networking” option.

Step 2

Log on with an account that has administrator privileges, open a web browser and proceed to download Malwarebytes using the link in the Resources section. Malwarebytes is a highly rated free software program that will help you remove the redirect virus from your computer.

Step 3

Install Malwarebytes. At the end of the installation process, ensure that both check boxes are checked so that it will download updates and then start up.

Step 4

Use the Scan option to run a full system scan on your computer. Remove any infections that are found and close the program.

Step 5

Go to the Trend Micro House Call website. This site offers a free online virus scanner that will scan your computer through a small browser applet. Follow the instructions on the site and complete a full system scan. This scan can take several hours to complete, but once finished, remove any infections or viruses that are found.

Step 6

Restart your computer and allow it to boot up normally. Open your Web browser and confirm that you are no longer affected by the redirect virus. If you are, perform these removal steps again. You may have to repeat these steps several times in order to remove the virus completely, depending on what type of virus you have and how badly your system is infected.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't get to any Web pages to download this software, try to download it on another computer and copy it to the infected one with a USB flash drive or other storage media. You can also try installing a different browser on the infected computer, such as Firefox, Chrome or Opera, and seeing if you can use one of those browsers to download the necessary files and access the online scanners.
