How to Replace an Email Address

By Jeff Grundy

There are many reasons you might want to replace your email address. Perhaps your account receives a lot of spam, you no longer wish to receive messages from a certain person or company, or your Internet service provider has gone out of business. Regardless of the reason for getting a new email account, the process is relatively simple. The most difficult part will be making sure that friends and family members have your updated account information so they can contact you.

Things You'll Need

  • Email account service provider
  • Email addresses of colleagues, friends and relatives

Step 1

Sign up for a new dial-up or broadband Internet access account. Most Internet service providers offer subscribers an email account they can use for as long as they use the company's Internet services.

Step 2

Obtain a free web-based email account from providers such as Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo!. These companies provide free email accounts that you can use as long as you like. You can access them from anywhere you have access to the Internet, or you can set up an email client to retrieve your messages on a local computer. Providers may charge for the client service.

Step 3

Log in to the email account you want to replace and record the email addresses for all the people you want to inform of your new email account. Some providers may allow you to export the list.

Step 4

Import the addresses of your contacts into your the address book of your new email provider. If the application does not provide a way of automatically importing your contacts, manually enter them one at a time into the new address book.

Step 5

Compose an email informing people of your new email address. Instead of sending the emails one at a time, use the "CC" or "BCC" email function to forward copies to all contacts in your address book.

Step 6

Close the old email account by contacting the provider and telling them you no longer wish to use it. Do this by sending them an email from within the old account or contacting them by phone and providing log in and verification information.

Step 7

Start using your new email account.
