How to Reset a Password on a Router

By Jeffrey Ober

If a router's password is unknown, it is impossible to set up the router and change its configuration. Whether the password has been forgotten or the router has been in storage, the password can be reset on most routers by pressing a button. When the password is reset, all the default manufacturer internal settings will be applied to the router at the same time. This process cannot be undone once you press the button.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper clip

Step 1

Plug the router into an electrical outlet. This process will only work while the router has access to electrical power.

Step 2

Look at the rear side of the router.

Step 3

Locate the "Reset" button. This is a small button that is recessed inside the router. It cannot be pressed normally, as the button usually appears inside a small hole in the back of the router. It is usually labeled.

Step 4

Unbend the paper clip. One end of the paper clip will be used to press the button.

Step 5

Press the "Reset" button with the end of the paper clip and hold it down for 30 seconds.
