How to Reset an iPod 4G to Factory Settings
The iPod 4G (fourth generation) is easy to restore to factory settings. This may reinstall the software, and it always wipes all music, video and other data from the iPod. Restoring is the most effective way to fix problems with the iPod that haven't been fixed through traditional troubleshooting. You will not be able to retrieve data from your iPod 4G once it's restored, so make sure you back up your information first.
Things You'll Need
- Dock connector cable
Plug your iPod 4G into your computer with its dock connector USB cable.
Install the most recent version of iTunes and open iTunes. Wait a moment for your iPod to appear in the side bar.
Click on your iPod in the side bar and select "Restore." A pop-up window will ask if you're sure you want to clear your iPod and restore to factory settings. Click "Continue" and enter your password, if prompted.
Leave the iPod untouched and on a flat surface while it restores to original settings. It's important that you don't try to disconnect or use the iPod while it's restoring. You'll see a progress bar either on the iPod or your computer that indicates how far along the process is.
Select your new syncing settings (automatic sync or manual) when prompted after the restore is complete.
