How to Reset an iPod Password

By Alan Kirk

With the number of passwords people have to remember in today's computer age for devices and accounts, it's not unusual to forget one occasionally. If this happens with your iPod, there is no way to recover your password. Instead you must reset it, and to do that you will need to restore the original settings on your iPod.

Things You'll Need

  • USB connection cable
  • iTunes software

Step 1

Connect your iPod to the computer you originally synchronized with when you set it up. You cannot reset your iPod password using a different computer.

Step 2

Turn your iPod on while it is connected to the computer with the USB cable.

Step 3

Start the iTunes software. If you get a message that it cannot connect to your iPod because it is locked with a pass code, this is because you are using a computer other than the one you originally synchronized with.

Step 4

Select the summary tab on the iTunes software. Once you are on that tab, click on the button that says "Restore."

Step 5

Click on the settings icon on your iPod and then select the option to set your iPod password.

Step 6

Download your songs and videos in your folders on iTunes back onto your iPod, as restoring the settings erases all of your music and video files.

Tips & Warnings

  • After resetting your iPod password, write it down somewhere at your home and leave it in a secure location. This way you can find it if you forget it, and you won't have to restore your iPod and reload your files again.
  • Be sure to back up your iPod regularly on iTunes so you have your music saved on your computer, just in case a situation arises where you forget your password.
