How to Reset Kindle Firmware

By William Pullman

Amazon designed the Kindle e-book reader with a firmware reset function that allows you to return the device to the factory defaults. The firmware reset is useful if you plan on getting rid of your Kindle and you want to remove all of your personal information from the device. Resetting the firmware not only removes your personal information but also all of the data on your Kindle.

Step 1

Press and hold the "Shift," "Alt" and "R" buttons simultaneously on the Kindle keyboard until the screen goes blank.

Step 2

Push and hold the "Home" button until the screen with "Firmware Update," "Firmware Reset" and "Exit" appears.

Step 3

Press "2" to select "Firmware Reset." The screen shows "Firmware Reset Mode," along with some other data, while the device resets the firmware. Wait for the Kindle to reboot before pressing any buttons.
