How to Reset Settings on Your iPad

By Techwalla Contributor

Apple recommends a specific progression of actions when something isn't working right on the iPad: restart the iPad, force a problem app to close and reset the iPad. None of these actions deletes the user files on the device.

Step 1

Locate the "Sleep/Wake" button on the top right edge of the iPad. Press it and the "Home" button centered under the display simultaneously.

Step 2

Hold the buttons down for at least 10 seconds. The Apple logo will appear on the screen. Release the buttons.

Step 3

Click the "Settings" icon on the main screen of the iPad. Tap "General" from the left column of settings.

Step 4

Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap on "Reset."

Step 5

Tap on the "Reset All Settings" button at the top of the screen. Your files and data are not affected by the reset.

Tips & Warnings

  • If problems persist, move to the next recommended troubleshooting step: restoring the iPad to its original settings using iCloud or iTunes.
