How to Reset the Chip on an HP 88XL Inkjet Cartridge

By Nachiket Deshmukh

An HP 88XL inkjet printer contains internal memory that stores information about ink level from the previous two ink cartridges. If a printer indicates a low ink level warning, a user can refill the cartridge with ink, which is cheaper than buying a new cartridge. However, the printer may indicate a low ink level warning even after refilling the cartridge. This warning can be removed by resetting the inkjet cartridge chip.

Things You'll Need

  • Adhesive tape

Step 1

Remove the ink cartridge from the HP inkjet printer.

Step 2

Place a small piece of adhesive tape over the square copper contact located at the top of the second column from left. The contacts are located on one side of the cartridge.

Step 3

Place the cartridge back in the printer. Press the "Start" button to print an alignment page.

Step 4

Remove the cartridge from the printer. Place a piece of adhesive tape over the square copper contact located at the top of the second column from right.

Step 5

Place the cartridge back in the printer. Press the "Start" button to print an alignment page. The printer's LCD screen should display a full estimated ink level.

Tips & Warnings

  • Restart the printer if it still displays a low estimated ink level after following the above procedure. This resets the cartridge chip if it was not reset automatically.
