How to Reset Your Apple Macbook Login Password When You Have Forgotten it
A Mac users login password gives them the ability to login to their user account upon startup. If you forget your login password, it is impossible to login to your account and use any of the computer's features. Included in the OS X operating system, however, is a utility that allows you to reset your login password in case of such an emergency. So long as you have the OS X installation disc that came with your computer, you can reset your login password, should you forget it, in a few simple steps.
Things You'll Need
- Mac OS X installation disc
Power on the computer. Insert the Mac OS X installation disc into the computer's disc drive and click the "Restart" button to restart the computer. Press and hold the "C" key while the MacBook is restarting to boot the computer from the installation disc.
Select the "Use English as the main language" option and click the blue arrow to continue.
Click the "Utilities" option in the menu bar that appears on the installation screen and select the "Reset Password" option from the Utilities menu.
Click on the computer's hard drive in the "Reset Password" window that appears. Select your user name from the "Select a user of this volume to reset their password" drop-down menu.
Type the new password for your account in the space labeled "Enter a new password for this user." Confirm the new password in the space labeled "Reenter the new password for this user." Enter a hint for the password in the space labeled "Enter a new password hint for this user" if you wish.
Click the "Save" button to save the password, followed by the "OK" button. Click the "Reset Password" option in the computer's menu bar and select the "Quit Reset Password" option from the drop-down menu.
Click the "Installer" option in the computer's menu bar and select the "Quit Installer..." option. Click the "Restart" option when prompted to restart the computer. Use the new login password you created in Step 5 to login to your user account as you normally would.
