How to Resize an MOV File

By Andrew Schrader

A QuickTime movie, or MOV, is the standard format for Apple's QuickTime Player. Since MOVs can be rather large files (as well as large in size), you may want to re-adjust the picture size to fit a portable media device, or to import into an editing program. Whatever your need may be, you can easily resize your MOVs in QuickTime Player with the additional Pro Component ($29.99 as of 2010) from Apple. Follow the same process as if you were converting the video to another format, since your video must be exported as another MOV in order to resize it. Please note that if you are making the video larger, this may result in a loss of video quality.

Things You'll Need

  • QuickTime Player and Pro Component

Step 1

Download and install QuickTime Player and the Pro Component from Apple. Agree to the licensing terms and launch the program.

Step 2

Click "File" and select "Open File" to locate your MOV in the pop-up window and open in QuickTime Player.

Step 3

Select "Export..." from the "File" menu. Choose "Movie to QuickTime Movie" from the drop down menu of export options.

Step 4

Click the "Options" button and select "Size..." Choose a new dimension from the drop down menu. You may select "16x9" or "4x3" settings, along with letterbox or cropping options.

Step 5

Click "OK" twice to exit back to the "Save Exported File As..." window. Rename your file, if desired, and click "Save" to begin the resizing/conversion process.
