How to Resize Photo Images

By Travis Larson

Images that are downloaded from your camera are often quite large and need resizing. Resizing transfers and displays images faster on websites and in email applications that limit the size of images users can upload. In Windows operating systems, users can resize images with Microsoft Paint. Microsoft Paint is a built-in graphics program that performs basic functions such as resizing and cropping images and adding shapes and text.

Step 1

Click the Windows "Start" menu, then click "All Programs," then "Accessories," and then "Paint."

Step 2

Click the "Paint" button that is located on the toolbar at the top of the application, then click "Open." Select your image, then click "Open."

Step 3

Click "Resize" on the toolbar, under the "Home" tab.

Step 4

Check the box labeled "Maintain aspect ratio."

Step 5

Enter the percentage you want to reduce the image by, or enter a specific size in terms of pixels. Click "OK."

Step 6

Click the "Paint" button on the toolbar. Click "Save As," then select a file type for the image.

Step 7

Name the file differently than the original image and click "Save."
