How to Restore a Computer to a Certain Date

By Leigh Egan

If you have ever downloaded something to your computer that you cannot remove, or if you simply want to restore your computer to an earlier time, System Restore allows you to effectively restore your computer's system files to a previous date. System Restore will not affect your emails, documents or photos. However, it will uninstall programs or drivers that have caused your computer to work incorrectly or slowly. Keep in mind that system restore is not used to recover files that have been deleted or damaged.

Step 1

Close all programs on your computer. Save any work that needs to be saved.

Step 2

Click on the "Start" button in the left hand corner on your computer. Click on "Accessories," then click on "All Programs." Click on "System Tools," then click on "System Restore."

Step 3

Check the option that allows you to restore your computer to an earlier time when the system restore wizard appears. The System Restore wizard will automatically open once you click on the "System Restore" icon.

Step 4

Click on a date on the calendar on the left hand side of the System Restore wizard. Be certain to choose from one of the highlighted dates in bold as these dates are the only dates that you can restore your computer to.

Step 5

Confirm that you have selected the correct date that you want to restore your computer to and then click "Next." Wait while your computer gathers the required information to restore your computer. Your computer will reboot after several minutes and restore itself to the date selected.
