How to Restore a File That Was Replaced and Saved Over

By TS Jordan

Mistakes are commonplace when it comes to computers, and one of the biggest computer-related blunders is accidentally overwriting a file. Although you might assume that there is no chance of recovering the original, you might be able to salvage a copy of the overwritten file by using the Volume Shadow Copy tools in your operating system.

Step 1

Click on the "Start" menu and select "Search."

Step 2

Choose the option to search for "All Files and Folders."

Step 3

Type in the name of the overwritten file and press the "Search" button.

Step 4

Right-click on the file and select the "Properties" option.

Step 5

Select the "Previous Versions" tab and select the version of the file which you wish to restore from the menu onscreen.

Step 6

Click on the "Restore" button.
