How to Restore an 80GB iPod Classic

By Jared Huizenga

Whether you're having problems that a reset couldn't correct or if you just want to wipe all of the information off your 80GB iPod Classic, a full restore is your best option. When you restore your 80GB iPod Classic, iTunes restores it to its factory settings -- making it just like the day you took it out of the box.

Things You'll Need

  • Newest version of iTunes
  • iPod dock connector to USB sync cable

Step 1

Open the newest version of iTunes on your computer.

Step 2

Connect your 80GB iPod Classic to your computer -- the dock connector end of the cable inserts into the dock connector on the bottom of your iPod and the USB end of the cable inserts into a USB port on your computer.

Step 3

Click the iPod icon in the "Devices" section on the left side of iTunes, below "Library" and "Store." Clicking this icon will bring you to the "Summary" menu, which includes information about your iPod and iTunes, including which version of iTunes you're using and how much storage space is available on your iPod.

Step 4

Use the scroll bar on the far-right side of iTunes to scroll down so "Version" is visible in the main iTunes window.

Step 5

Click the "Restore" button, which is located below "Check for Update" in the "Version" section of the main iTunes window.

Step 6

Enter an administrator name and password in the pop-up window if you are using a Mac. If you are using a PC, you will not need to complete this step.

Step 7

Leave your iPod connected to your computer for the second stage of the restore process. During the second stage, your 80GB iPod Classic will display the Apple logo and a status bar on its screen.

Step 8

Look for the "iTunes Setup Assistant" window to appear on your computer. This indicates your 80GB iPod Classic has been restored to its original factory settings. At this time, you can rename your 80GB iPod Classic and choose your syncing preferences, or you can disconnect and leave it to be set up at a later time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Restoring your 80GB iPod Classic will erase all music, movies and photos. Make sure anything you want to save is backed up to your computer.
