How to Restore iPhone Text From Backup

By Jefe Nubarron

Apple has designed the iTunes computer application to manage support for all their iPhone operating system (iOS) type devices, including iPhones, iPods and iPads. You can back up and restore your iPhone using iTunes. Whenever you sync an iOS device to a computer with iTunes, the contents are automatically backed up. An iTunes backup of any iPhone will contain Short Message Service (SMS) text messages among the data that is backed up. To restore old text messages to your iPhone, you can restore the phone from a backup taken by iTunes.

Things You'll Need

  • USB cable for iPhone

Step 1

Open iTunes on your computer. If you do not have iTunes installed already, you can download it from Apple's website (see Resources) and then install it.

Step 2

Connect your iPhone to the white USB cable that came with it or a replacement. One end of the cable plugs into the bottom of your phone and the other end plugs into one of your computer's USB ports.

Step 3

Listen for a beep from your iPhone when you connect it to your computer and look for it to appear in the left column of the iTunes application window. If you look towards the middle of the left column of iTunes, your phone should appear by name directly under the "Devices" section.

Step 4

Right-click on your iPhone's name in the left column of iTunes. This displays a menu. Select the "Restore from Backup" option. On Mac computers with single-button mice, you can hold down the "Control" key and click with your mouse button to activate the same menu.

Step 5

Select from the list of available backups. If there is only one backup listed, select that. If more than one is listed, choose the most recent one that corresponds to your phone. The backup list will include dates, times and the name of the device backed up.

Step 6

Do nothing while the restore process proceeds. You may need to wait for 10 or more minutes depending upon the amount of data and generation of iPhone you have. Once the restore process is completed, your iPhone will have all the old apps and data from the time of that backup, including your old text messages.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you restore from a backup on an iPhone, you will lose any new data added to the phone since the previous backup was done. This will include text messages that you received. Copy any critical information from these messages prior to restoring your phone.
