By Karen Silvestri

Windows XP comes with a system-restore facility that enables the restoration of the system to any chosen point. This is particularly handy in case of a virus attack that cannot be fixed by anti-virus programs. Follow these basic tips to restore XP to the factory settings.

Step 1

Save and close all programs that are being currently used.

Step 2

Point to Start and then Accessories, then click on System Tools.

Step 3

From the proffered menu, select "Restore My Computer to an Earlier Time." Then click "Next."

Step 4

From the following menu, a calendar, select the time to which you want to restore your system. Then click "Next."

Step 5

Confirm the restore point (in red), ensure all programs are closed and click "Next." This will begin the restoration process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you back up all programs.
  • Only system files are restored. If a file is saved, it will not change.
  • The process is completely reversible.
  • Don't forget to read all the instructions during the System Restore process.
