How to Retrieve Deleted Text From a SIM Card Phone

By Ty Arthur

Global system for mobile phone, or GSM, networks use a device called a SIM card to store your mobile phone's contact information and text messages. Much like with a standard hard drive, any data that is deleted from the SIM card isn't actually gone. When you erase a text message it is simply hidden until a new text message is saved over it. If the old message hasn't yet been replaced with a new one, you can use a SIM card recovery tool to retrieve the deleted message and return it to your inbox.

Things You'll Need

  • SIM recovery software

Step 1

Connect your phone's USB cable to an open USB port on your computer. If you have a SIM computer card reader, you can instead remove the SIM card from the phone and insert it into the card reader.

Step 2

Access an online source links that offers a SIM card recovery tool. Download one of the programs such as "Pro Data Doctor SIM Card Recovery," "SMS Recovery," or "001 Micron Sim Card Recovery." Follow the program's installation instructions.

Step 3

Click the "Download" or "Read" icon. Select the drive that corresponds to your cell phone's USB cable or SIM card. Click "OK."

Step 4

Select the "Scan" or "Recover" option. Wait for the program to search through the SIM card for deleted text messages.

Step 5

Check through the list of text messages that appears on the right side of the screen. Click the "Sender Number" tab at the top of the screen to arrange the messages by the phone number from which they were sent.

Step 6

Click the specific message you want to recover. Select the "Restore" or "Undelete" option to retrieve the message and save it in the phone's text message inbox.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most SIM card recovery programs allow you to save the text messages to your computer's hard drive as well. Navigate to the "Options" menu and set the recovery location folder to a folder on your hard drive.
  • Each recovery program works slightly differently. Check the program's help files if you don't see the same buttons or options.
  • If you want to remove the SIM card to use a card reader, you can generally find the card underneath the phone's battery.
  • SIM card recovery software cannot restore text messages from phones that display the "PUK Lock" message. A PUK lock occurs when you incorrectly enter the phone's PIN a certain number of times. To retrieve messages from a PUK locked phone, you need to contact your cellular service provider.
