How to See My Ink Level on My Screen

By James Clark

Many brands of computer ink-jet printers are equipped with a feature for displaying the remaining ink levels in the cartridges on the computer screen. This handy feature makes it possible to gauge the approximate printing life left in each cartridge without opening the printer to remove and inspect each ink cartridge. Remaining ink levels are displayed graphically and in color for each cartridge. The ink-level utility can be accessed through the printer software installed on the computer with a few mouse clicks.

Step 1

Click "Control Panel" and select "Printers" on a Windows computer or double-click the printer icon on an Apple computer to open the printer utility.

Step 2

Click the "Properties" tab at the top of the screen to open a new window.

Step 3

Click "Ink Levels," "Check Print Cartridges, "Cartridge Status Monitor" or similar wording, which can vary depending on the printer model. This will display a color graphic of the printer cartridges on the computer screen, with the approximate amount of ink remaining in each.

Step 4

Click the "X" in the upper right corner of a Windows computer screen to close the utility, or click the red circle in the upper left corner of an Apple computer to close the utility.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check ink levels and consider replacing cartridges when the color begins to streak or fade on the printed page.
