How to Send a PDF to a Fax Machine

By Amy Dombrower

Fax machines are used to transport copies of paper documents from one place to another. To send a fax, you need a fax machine as well as the fax number of your recipient. If you don’t have access to a fax machine, it's possible to send an electronic version of a document and save paper in the meantime. There are a variety of software programs and online applications that let you send a Portable Document Format (PDF) as well as other common file formats to a fax machine. Some are free, while others charge a monthly fee for using the service. Try these three services, none of which require downloading any software.

Things You'll Need

  • Internet access
  • PDF document
  • E-mail address

FaxZero

Step 1

Log on to FaxZero (see Resources), a site that lets you fax a document to any machine in the United States and Canada for free. International faxing requires a small fee.

Step 2

Enter your name and e-mail address in the “Sender Information” box. You must have a valid e-mail address to receive the fax confirmation. Enter the name and fax number of your recipient.

Step 3

Click “Browse” to select a PDF file from your computer. Enter the confirmation code that is listed. This is to prevent robots from spamming the site.

Step 4

Click “Send Free Fax Now.”

Step 5

Open the confirmation e-mail you’ll receive in your inbox. Click the link in the e-mail to confirm the fax so it can be sent. Otherwise, your fax will not be sent. Once the fax is delivered, you’ll receive another e-mail to notify you.

MyFax

Step 1

Log on to MyFax (see Resources), a free service that will allow you send faxes to more than 40 countries.

Step 2

Enter your recipient’s name, company name, country and fax number in the “To” section. Under “From,” enter your name, company and valid e-mail address. Once the fax transmits, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to you.

Step 3

Click “Browse” to select a PDF file. Make sure that file is 10 MB or less and no more than 10 pages. Enter a text message to accompany the file if you want.

Step 4

Click “Send Fax.”

Step 5

Open your e-mail to receive the confirmation e-mail notifying you that the fax was sent.

PamFax

Step 1

Log on and sign up for PamFax (see Resources). PamFax is available for a small fee per fax, but it will give you three free pages the first time you use it.

Step 2

Click the “Send Fax” tab at the top of the PamFax dashboard. Click “Send a File.”

Step 3

Click “Choose a File” to select the PDF file you want to send. Click “Next.”

Step 4

Enter the fax number and name of the recipient. Click the flag symbol to change the country to which you’ll be sending the fax. Click “Next” and choose whether you want a coversheet.

Step 5

Click “Next” again to go to the “Notification Settings.” Choose how you want to be notified about your fax—via Skype, e-mail or text message. Click “Next.” Choose “Preview My Fax” to view the fax. Click “Send Fax” and the fax will be sent.
