How to Send a Text Message to a Verizon Phone

By Elizabeth Wolfenden

Many people mistakenly believe that sending a text message to a Verizon phone number can only be done through another cell phone, but this is not the case. Although that is one option, you can also send a text message to a Verizon phone through Verizon's website, or even through email. No matter which method you use, the process is simple and straightforward, and can be completed in just a few easy steps.

From Verizon.com

Step 1

Go to Verizon's website and click on the "Wireless" link at the top of the page (see Resources). When the next page appears, hover your cursor over the "Messaging" option on the red navigation bar towards the top of the page. Then hover the cursor over the "Text Messaging" option that appears on the drop down messaging menu and choose the "Send a Text" option.

Step 2

Enter in all of the necessary information, including the Verizon phone number of the person you wish to text and the text message itself. The "From," "Reply-To Address" and "Callback Number" fields are optional. However, note that if you chose to enter information into those optional fields, it will count towards the 160 character limit for the text.

Step 3

Click the "Send" button and enter the verification security code in order to send your message. Note that the security code is case sensitive, and you may refresh the page to get a new security if you are unable to clearly read the first code.

Step 4

Wait for the confirmation message to appear. The next page should have a rectangle that shows all of the information within the text, along with a status and delivery-confirmation message stating whether or not the text went through.

From a Cell Phone

Step 1

Access the "Messages" menu of your cell phone from the main menu. Select the "Text Messaging" option and the go to the "Create new message" section. You can select the phone number of the person you are texting from the address book on your cell phone, or manually enter the number.

Step 2

Enter your message by using the letters located on the keypad of your cell phone. There is typically a limit of 160 characters for text messages.

Step 3

Send the message. Click "Options" and select "Send Message."

From Email

Step 1

Open your email program and click to compose a new message.

Step 2

Address your email. Since you are sending the text through email, you will have to convert the Verizon phone number to information that resembles an email address. For Verizon phone numbers, this is done by adding the @ symbol and "vtext.com" to the end of the phone number. For example, if the Verizon number was 555-555-5555, then the address you enter would be 5555555555@vtext.com.

Step 3

Enter the message into the body of the email and click send. Unfortunately, unlike sending a text through Verizon's website or your phone, the email will not indicate when you have reached the maximum 160 characters. Be conscientious of surpassing the maximum character limit, or your message may be cut off.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have a cell phone service plan that includes texting, consider using the online or email options instead of your cell phone.
