How to Set a Widescreen Monitor to Fullscreen Resolution

By David Godfrey

Widescreen monitors have become the standard amongst PC users. Widescreen monitors offer sharper pictures with higher resolutions than the previous fullscreen monitors, while simultaneously providing a better viewing experience for multimedia. Windows sets your monitor based on the highest resolution it can produce, but you can change these settings in the Control Panel.

Step 1

Log into a Windows profile with administrative privileges.

Step 2

Click on the "Start" menu button on the bottom of your desktop.

Step 3

Click the "Control Panel" button.

Step 4

Click the "Appearance and Personalization" button.

Step 5

Click the "Display" button.

Step 6

Click the "Adjust Resolution" button on the left of the "Display" menu.

Step 7

Click the resolution button, then select the appropriate resolution you wish to use. The monitor icon will change depending on the orientation of the resolution. For instance, if you change from your widescreen resolution (represented as a rectangle) to a fullscreen resolution, the monitor will change to a square.
