How to Set an Outgoing Message on an iPhone

By Avery Martin

The iPhone provides a useful tool for managing your appointments, keeping up with social media and plenty of apps to stay productive. While the default voice message varies depending on your carrier, you can customize the message to play your own recorded greeting. Regardless of whether you have service with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon, the process of setting the outgoing message on your iPhone remains the same. Visual Voicemail on iOS 7 provides a convenient way to quickly find and listen to messages as well as create and preview your default greeting.

Step 1

Tap the "Phone" app.

Step 2

Select the "Voicemail" tab.

Step 3

Tap the "Greeting" button.

Step 4

Select the "Custom" option and click the "Record" button. Speak clearly into the phone in the same manner used when talking on the phone.

Step 5

Tap the "Stop" button when you finish creating your message.

Step 6

Tap the "Save" button to save your message. Select "Play" to preview the message. If you don't like the message, you can record it again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some carriers don't provide the Visual Voicemail service, or only provide it as an option for an extra fee. If this applies to you, when you select the VoiceMail tab, you get directed to your carrier's voicemail system. Follow the prompts to set your greeting. This process varies by carrier.
