How to Set up a Basic Facebook Account
Facebook was established as a college networking website, but now it's open to everyone. The social networking site allows you to reconnect with old friends and classmates, send messages and share pictures with your family. Anyone can sign up for a free Facebook account; it takes only a few minutes.
Open your computer Internet browser and go to the Facebook Sign Up Web page.
Fill in your first and last names, your email address and password. Select your sex and birthday from the drop-down menus provided. Click "Sign Up" to proceed.
Add information to your new Facebook profile. You don't have to fill in all the sections, but the more information you enter, the easier it is for people to find you on the site. Enter your high school or college and the class year; enter your hometown and your current town. Enter your relationship status, if you desire, along with other information you want to share with your Facebook friends.
Pick a good Facebook profile picture. Follow the site prompts to upload the photo. This picture can be seen by everyone, so make sure it is tasteful. Facebook is not a dating website, but you don't want to look bad, especially if you're reconnecting with old friends from years ago.
Set your privacy settings. You can do this by clicking on the "Account" menu in the upper right corner of the screen and selecting "Privacy Setting" from the drop-down menu. It's never a good idea to allow the public to view everything, especially if you've listed any personally identifiable information. A good setting is to allow only your Facebook friends to view your profile and any other information.
Start adding Facebook friends. To search for a specific individual, type his name in the search box at the top of the page. If you see him in the search results, click on his name to reveal his public profile. Click the "Add Friend" button at the top of the profile to send a friend request. All friend requests must be approved by the individuals to whom they are sent.
Click the "Find Friends" tab in the top right corner of the Facebook page. Facebook will use the personal information you entered into your profile to make friend suggestions for you. You can select specific criteria in the left column to narrow in on specific groups of potential Facebook friends. For example, you can enter a current or former employer's name, and the results will show Facebook users who have listed that employer on their profile. Click on the name of individual and click "Add Friend" to send a friend request.
Make your first status post on your profile and then wait for the friend acceptances to come in. Once you have a few friends, look at their friend lists. It is likely you have mutual friends you can add to your friend list.
