How to Set Up a TV With a U-verse Remote

By Maya Austen

U-verse is a service provided by AT&T which offers high-speed Internet, home phone, and cable TV service delivered via fiber-optic technology. The U-verse remote control is a universal remote control that comes with the U-verse cable TV service. Universal remote controls are programmable remotes that are configured to work with other video and audio devices. To set up a U-verse remote control to work with a TV set, you may use one of two programming methods---the manual programming method or the code search method.

Manually Program Method

Step 1

Look up the device codes assigned to the TV's brand (see Resources).

Step 2

Press the "Power" button on the TV to manually turn it on.

Step 3

Press and hold the "TV" mode button located at the top of the U-verse remote control. Without releasing the "TV" button, then also press and hold the "Mode" button.

Step 4

Release both buttons, simultaneously. The LED light in all of the device mode buttons located at the top of the U-Verse remote control (labeled "TV," "DVD" and "AUX") should flash two times indicating that the remote is now in program setup mode. If these lights don't flash, repeat steps 1 and 2.

Step 5

Use the number pad on the U-verse remote control to enter one of the 4-digit codes assigned to the TV's brand. If a valid code was entered correctly, the LED light in the "Mode" button will flash three times, then turn off. If an invalid code was entered, the LED light in the "Mode" button will flash for one long sustained moment, then turn off. Repeat steps 2 through 4, if a invalid code was entered.

Step 6

Aim the U-verse remote control at the TV set and press the "Power" button. If the TV shuts off, the remote is properly programmed to control the TV. If the TV fails to shut off, repeat steps 2 through 5 using one of the alternate 4-digit codes assigned to the TV's brand. If none of these codes work, try programming the U-verse remote control using the Code Search method.

Code Search Program Method

Step 1

Press and hold the "TV" mode button located at the top of the U-verse remote control. Then also press and hold the "Mode" button without releasing the "TV" button.

Step 2

Release both buttons, simultaneously. The LED light in all of the device mode buttons located at the top of the U-Verse remote control should flash two times, indicating that the remote is now in program setup mode.

Step 3

Use the number pad on the U-verse remote control to enter "9 2 2" to place the remote in code search mode. If the code search code was entered correctly, the LED light in the "Mode" button will flash three times, then turn off. If the code search code was not entered correctly, the LED light in the "Mode" button will flash for one long sustained moment, then turn off.

Step 4

Aim the U-verse remote control at the TV set and press the "Play" button. Then slowly and continuously press the "Fast Forward" button until the TV shuts off. Each time the "Fast Forward" button is pressed, the U-verse remote tests a new code from its code library on the TV. When the TV shuts off, it means the remote is temporarily programmed with the correct code.

Step 5

Press "Enter" to save the code permanently.
