How to Set up an eBay Account
eBay is an online auction website where you can buy and sell anything from cars to tiny figurines that sit on your shelves. You can peruse the site without an account, but to buy anything or to sell any of your own items, you must create an account for the website. Creating an account is a matter of filling out an online form and agreeing to the sites policies.
Navigate to the eBay homepage. You will see two buttons: one that says "Sign in," one that says "Register." Click "Register" to access eBay's registration page.
Input the appropriate information on the "Welcome to Registration" page. This includes basic information about yourself such as name, address and email address.
Create your username and password. Your username will be what you use to log in, as well as the screen name other buyers and sellers will see. If you plan to use your account for business and selling products, choose a screen name that reflects a professional persona that's related to your business or that will help brand you. You want customers to remember and recognize you. If you are just using your account to buy things, just choose something you will remember easily.
Enter your password again in the confirmation box. Choose something that you will remember easily but not so easy that someone will be able to guess it. Write it down and store it in a safe place.
Choose a secret question. This is a question that only you know the answer to. If you forget your password or login info, eBay customer service representatives can verify that it is you before sending you your password.
Tips & Warnings
- To start selling, click the "My eBay," and choose "Sell" on the drop-down menu.
- If you are just getting your feet wet selling on eBay, start with the minimum options for your listing, instead of paying for all the additional features. That way you are only out $2 or $3, instead of $5 or even $20.
- As a buyer, be sure you can afford to pay for what you bid on. If you win the bid and then renege on the deal, you will get a bad buyer rating from the seller. These marks against you can add up and eventually could get you banned from eBay or banned from bidding.
