How to Set Up an eBay Account to Sell Items

By Lizz Shepherd

Before selling items on eBay, it's necessary to set up an account with the site and to give them some specific personal information. The site does verify some of the information that members submit, making it important to list accurate contact information. It's also important to choose a user name that makes the seller sound like a trustworthy transaction partner.

Step 1

Go to eBay.com and click on the link at the top of the page that says "Register." This will take you to a page where you will enter your basic contact information such as your name, your primary mailing address and the telephone number that will best reach you. The site often checks this number, so make sure it is one that you have ready access to.

Step 2

Enter your choice for your user name in the box. After doing so, click on the button next to it so that eBay can check to see if the name is already in use. Your user name must be unique, so some members find that they have to try two or three times before they find a name that will be accepted. Because you want to sell, be sure to choose a name that doesn't sound crude or immature. This can turn away potential buyers. If the name is vulgar, it will attract complaints and may result in account suspension.

Step 3

Agree to the privacy policy and the eBay user agreement. To look them over before agreeing, click on the links that are located in the last section of the registration page.

Step 4

Place a credit card on file when you are prompted to do so. When you attempt to sell something through the site, you will be prompted to place a credit card on file to pay the fees associated with listing items for sale. You can also use your bank debit card as your credit card or your PayPal debit card.
