How to Setup a Free VPN
VPN (Virtual Private Network) technology can enable you to securely connect to a remote private network or computer over the Internet. This is done by establishing an encrypted "tunnel" through which the remote computer and private network hosts can safely communicate. VPN technology is built into most current Microsoft Windows computers.
Things You'll Need
- Microsoft Windows 7 computer with Internet connection
- IP address of the Microsoft Windows 7 computer with Internet connection
- Internet IP address of the router or firewall protecting the Microsoft Windows 7 computer
- Microsoft Windows 7 remote client computer with Internet connection
Click the "Start" button, then click "Control Panel" on the Windows 7 computer that is connected to the private network that you wish to access using a VPN. The "Control Panel" window will appear.
Double-click the "Network and Sharing Center" icon. In the "Network and Sharing Center" window click "Change Adapter Settings."
Press the "ALT" and "F" keys at the same time or click the "File" menu. Click "New Incoming Connection" in the drop-down menu that appears. In the window that appears, click to select each account you wish to grant permission to VPN connect to the Windows 7 computer.
Select "Through the Internet" and then click the "Next" button.
Click "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) " in the list of protocols, and then click the "Properties" window. The "Incoming IP Properties" window will appear.
Click the "Allow callers to access my local area network" check box. Click the "Assign IP addresses automatically using DHCP" radio button, and then click the "OK" button.
Click the "Allow Access" button to accept the settings selected (which will enable Local Area Network communication through the VPN). Click the "Close" button to complete the incoming VPN connection configuration.
Configure the router or firewall from port 1723 to the IP address of the Windows 7 computer. Enable "PPTP" pass through on the router or firewall (if applicable to the firewall or router).
Click the "Start" button on the Windows 7 remote client computer, then click "Control Panel." Double-click "Network and Internet," and the "Network and Internet" window will appear.
Click on the "Network and Sharing Center" link. Click on the "Set up a new connection or Network" link.
Click "Connect to a workplace" and click the "Next" button. In the next window click "Use my Internet connection (VPN)".
Type the Internet side IP address of the router or firewall protecting the Windows 7 VPN computer into the "Internet address:" field. Type a name for the VPN connection in the "Destination name" field. Click the "Next" button.
Type the name of the user account that has permissions to connect to the Windows 7 VPN computer in the "User Name" field and type the password for the same account in the "Password" field. Click the "Remember this password" check-box only if the remote Windows 7 client computer is a private computer, and then click the "Create" button.
Click the "Connect Now," then click to test the new VPN connection.
