How to Share Apps Between an iPhone & iPad

By David Weedmark

You can use many apps in the iTunes App Store with both an iPhone and an iPad. These are called Universal Apps, and can be identified in the App Store by the "+" sign located on the left of the app's price. If you have downloaded any of these apps, you can load them to both your iPhone and your iPad. To do this, just connect either device to your computer, select the apps you want loaded in iTunes and sync the device.

Step 1

Connect either the iPhone or iPad to the computer using the provided USB cable. ITunes cannot accept more than one device at a time.

Step 2

Launch iTunes on the computer if it does not automatically open when you connect the device. Wait for iTunes to sync with the device.

Step 3

Click the "Apps" menu in the Library section of iTunes. This shows all of the apps you have downloaded using your Apple ID. Universal apps are at the top, in the "iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Apps" section. These can be used on both devices; other apps can be used only on the iPad or the iPhone.

Step 4

Click the iPhone or iPad link in the "Devices" section of iTunes. Click the "Apps" tab at the top of the screen.

Step 5

Scroll down the list of available apps and click the check box beside each to select the ones you want on the device.

Step 6

Click "Apply" and "Sync." The selected apps are loaded to your device.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have downloaded an app wirelessly to an iPhone or iPad, sync it with iTunes to load the app to your computer, then sync the other device to share the app.
