How to Stop Redirects in Internet Explorer 8
Annoying and unwanted redirects can quickly ruin your Internet Explorer 8 browsing experience. These redirects take you off of the website you want to visit and automatically send you to other sites you don't want to see. Browser redirects may be caused by malicious viruses or malware on your computer or by a corrupt add-on. In either case, this problem can be fixed with some investigative work and use of the Windows Defender virus scan program.
Things You'll Need
- Internet Explorer 8
- Windows Defender
Disable and isolate your Internet Explorer 8 add-ons to find the corrupt add-on responsible for the redirects. Right-click the Internet Explorer 8 icon. In the pop-up menu, select "Start without Add-ons."
Browse your usual websites normally. If you can browse normally, close Internet Explorer 8 and reopen it as usual. Click "Tools," select "Manage Add-ons" and turn off all add-ons. Close the Web browser.
Isolate the add-on that is causing the redirect. Open the Web browser, activate one add-on and browse your usual websites normally. Repeat the process until you find the corrupted add-on causing the problem. Disable or uninstall the add-on in question. If this does not solve the problem, you may need to scan your computer with anti-virus software.
Close all programs running on your computer and place your computer into "safe mode." Open the "Start" menu, click the arrow next to "Shut Down" and choose "Restart." Wait for the computer to shut down and automatically reboot.
Press and hold "F8" on your keyboard as your computer restarts. At the "Advanced Boot Options" screen, highlight "Safe Mode with Networking" with the arrow keys and press "Enter."
Log on to a Windows account that has administrative permissions. Once you have logged on, you will need to use Windows Defender to scan and remove viruses and other malware.
Open the "Start" menu, click "Control Panel" and select "Windows Defender." Click on the "Scan" button to initiate a sweep of your computer. Defender should automatically remove any threats located on your computer.
Close Windows Defender and restart your computer. Log into your regular account and open Internet Explorer 8. Test the browser and look for any unwanted redirects by browsing your usual websites.
