How to Stream From the Computer to the TV With Wi-Fi

By Luke Arthur

When you have video or other content on your computer, it may not be convenient to access it when you are in other areas of the house. Because of this, many want to be able to stream content from their computers onto their televisions over Wi-Fi. While this is possible, you must have the appropriate computer operating system and the correct equipment to be able to make it work. Otherwise, you may have to run a cable from the computer to the TV.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows Media Center Extender
  • Xbox 360
  • Computer with Windows Vista or Windows 7

Step 1

Plug the Windows Media Center Extender into one of the HDMI ports on the back of your television. This device is required to be able to hook up wirelessly to the information on your computer. If you do not have a Windows Media Center Exender, you can also use an Xbox 360 instead. It comes with the built-in ability to stream content from your computer.

Step 2

Configure the Windows Media Center Extender or the Xbox 360 with the remote on your extender. This can be done quickly and easily by answering questions on the appropriate prompts. For example, you will need to do the aspect ratio that you want and the wireless network that you will be hooking up to. Once you select the wireless network, you will also need to enter the Wi-Fi password.

Step 3

Verify the Windows Media Center Extender or Xbox 360 with your computer. Once you complete the setup process with your Windows Media Center Extender or Xbox 360, you will be given a verification code. Write down the code and then take it to your computer. The computer may recognize it automatically as new hardware. If not, you may need to go into your computer and search for the new hardware. Enter the code and the verification process should only take a few seconds.

Step 4

Allow the computer and the Windows Media Center Extender to run the streaming quality check. This may take a few minutes and it is essential to see how good the quality of the video will run. In some cases, you may need to switch the connection over to the 5 GHz band so that you can have the best quality streaming video. Once you are done with this, you should be able to select videos from your computer and watch them on your TV.
