How to Submit a URL List to Yahoo!

By Leonardo R. Grabkowski

Submitting a list of URLs on your website to the Yahoo! search engine can help Yahoo! index your pages faster. If your site is dynamic and you frequently add new content, such as articles, pages or blog posts, a better option than submitting a list of URLs would be to generate a dynamic XML sitemap that's updated each time you post. If your site is static, however, a basic URL list works just fine.

Step 1

Open a basic text editor -- such as Notepad -- and create a list of the URLs you want to submit to the Yahoo! search engine. Place each URL on a separate line and include the "http://" portion of the URL.

Step 2

Save the file as urllist.txt. Upload the text file to the root level of your website, so it can be accessed like this:

Step 3

Visit the Yahoo! Site Explorer page at Sign in to your account with your username and password.

Step 4

Click the "Submit Your Site" link. Click on "Submit Site Feed." Paste the link to the URL list file. Click on "Submit Feed."

Step 5

Click on "Authentication." Click on "Upload a Verification File." Click "Download" to download the HTML verification file.

Step 6

Upload the verification file to the root level of your website. Click "Ready to Authenticate." Yahoo! will authenticate your site within 24 hours. You can monitor the status of the request on the Yahoo! Site Explorer account page.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also create an XML sitemap, if desired. This process varies depending on your content management system. Search your CMS repository to find a plugin or module that generates an XML sitemap for you, and then submit its URL instead of the text file.
