How to Switch Verizon Phones Online

By Kefa Olang

Have you recently just purchased a Verizon phone from ebay, a friend or other online store? Switching to your new Verizon phone is a simple process that takes minutes to complete. Activating your phone at a local Verizon dealer costs money and time, something you can save if you activate yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Verizon cell phone
  • Internet connection

Step 1

Open the battery compartment located on the back of the Verizon phone you want to switch to. You should see the battery. On the battery, you should see the ESN number and Serial number (S/N). Write down the ESN number. Different phone models vary, but generally the ESN consists of 11 numbers.

Step 2

Go to the Verizon wireless Web site and log into your account. If you do not have an account, create a free one by clicking "Register online." Follow the guided instructions to create a Verizon wireless account.

Step 3

Click the "Go" button under "My Services" and click "Activate Phone." Click "Activate Equipment."

Step 4

Select your phone number and enter the ESN number of the phone you want to switch to. Enter the reason you want to switch phones and click "Submit." You should see a message that says "ESN Change Successful."

Step 5

Wait 5 to 10 minutes and dial *228 to complete the online programming of your new Verizon phone. You are connected to Verizon Wireless and will hear "Welcome to Verizon Wireless over-the-air programming." When prompted to, press 1 to begin the programming. When the programming process completes, a message says, "your phone has been programmed successfully."
