How to Sync an Apple TV With a PC

By Marshal M. Rosenthal

The AppleTV is a media server device designed to join a wired or wireless home network and display music, video and images stored on a computer. Syncing an AppleTV with a PC requires adjusting a few steps on both devices; the AppleTV through its “Settings” menu and the PC through the free iTunes program that is running on the computer. The procedure is not technical and works in the same manner as it does on a Mac computer. The AppleTV and the PC can be synced together within a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Wired/wireless home network

Step 1

Download the free iTunes program that will sync the PC to AppleTV from the Apple website (see the link in Resources). Double-click on the file once downloaded. Follow the menu commands to install the program on the PC’s hard drive. Restart the PC once done to avoid any conflicts with the Windows operating system.

Step 2

Turn on the AppleTV with the Apple remote control provided with it. Go to the “Settings” menu. Select “Network.” Select Sources” from the list of choices presented beneath “Network” on a new screen.

Step 3

Select “Connect to New iTunes” from the list of choices presented beneath “Sources:” on a new screen.

Step 4

Write down the five numbers that are presented inside of a “Connect to iTunes” pop-up window that appears.

Step 5

Launch the iTunes program by selecting it from the “Start,” “All Applications” pop-up menu on the PC. Drag any video, music or photo files into the upper left corner of the iTunes program to install the files into the iTunes Library that is on the PC’s hard drive.

Step 6

Click on the icon of the AppleTV that is beneath the “Devices” tab at the left side of the program. Enter the numbers that you wrote down into the “Passcode” text field that appears in the center column of iTunes.

Step 7

Name the AppleTV by entering a name in the empty text field that appears in the center column of iTunes. Click the “OK” button at the bottom right corner.

Step 8

Click the “Summary” tab at the top of the iTunes screen. Check the “Custom Sync” checkbox in the center column of iTunes---otherwise all of the files that is in the iTunes library will be transferred to the AppleTV when a syncing is done (this could overwhelm the AppleTV’s hard drive capacity).

Step 9

Click on a genre tab at the top of the iTunes screen to sync music, movies, TV shows, Podcasts, iTunes U collections or photos to the AppleTV. Click the “Sync XXX” checkbox beneath the tab, where “XXX’ is one of the genres. Check the checkbox that is next to one of the files beneath the “Sync XXX” checkbox.

Step 10

Click on the ‘Sync” button at the lower right corner of the iTunes program. A progress bar will appear in the display screen at the top of the iTunes program and fill in from left to right--signifying that the iTunes running on the PC and the AppleTV are being synced. Quit iTunes when a confirmation statement appears in the display screen that the syncing is done.

Tips & Warnings
