How to Sync Google With Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is Windows’ signature email client. It usually comes bundled with Microsoft Office, but it is also possible to buy it separately. With Microsoft Outlook, you can manage several email accounts through one program on your computer. Outlook also offers custom signatures, wallpapers and organization features. Using Outlook to manage email accounts, like Google’s Gmail, also allows you to skip the ads that accompany the messages. To synchronize Gmail with Outlook, you must configure Gmail and Outlook to work together.

Step

Sign in to your Gmail account in your computer’s web browser. Click “Settings” in the upper right corner of the inbox page. Click “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” on the Settings page. Select “Enable IMAP” under IMAP Access. Click “Save Changes” and exit the web browser.

Step

Open Microsoft Outlook on your computer. Click “Tools” from the toolbar across the top of the screen. Click “Email Accounts.” Select “Add a new email account.”

Step

Enter the name you want to associate with your Gmail account in Outlook. Remember that this is the way Outlook will introduce you to all your email recipients. Enter your Gmail address. Enter the password associated with your Gmail address twice. Check the box to indicate that you want to set this email account up manually. Click “Next.”

Step

Indicate that the email account is an Internet email account on the next page and click “Next.” Change the account type on the next page to “IMAP.” Enter the incoming mail server as “imp.gmail.com” and the outgoing server as “smtp.gmail.com.” Enter your Gmail address as the user name and the password in the next field. Indicate that you want Microsoft Outlook to remember your password instead of entering it each time you send or receive email. Click “More Settings.”

Step

Open the Advanced Settings tab. Change the incoming server port to “993” with an SSL encryption. Change the outgoing server port to “587” with a TLS encryption.

Step

Open the Outgoing Server tab. Indicate that the outgoing server requires authentication and that those settings are the same as your incoming server. Click “OK.”

Step

Click “Test settings” on the next screen Outlook shows you. Click “Finish” when Outlook shows you the success message.
