How to Sync Two Computers & iTunes Libraries?

By Rochelle Connery

If you have an iPod Classic, iPod Nano, iPod Touch or iPhone, you can sync two or more computers with the same library as long as both computers are running on the same operating system. Thus, if you have a Windows PC and you want to sync it with another Windows PC, or if you have two Macs, this will work. However, syncing a Windows computer and a Mac operating system will not. Note that you cannot use this method with the iPod Shuffle, as this device was intended for use on only one computer.

Things You'll Need

  • iPod device
  • USB cable for the iPod
  • Two computers with Windows or Mac operating systems

Step 1

Plug your iPod into the computer using the USB connector cable

Step 2

Open iTunes and authorize the computer if you haven't done so already. You can do this by selecting "Store -> Authorize Computer" and logging in using your email and password.

Step 3

Click on the name of the device in the left side of the pane and navigate to the Summary tab in the right side.

Step 4

Select the "Manually manage music and videos" option and press "Apply" to save your changes. Automatic library syncing is the default in iTunes, so you'll have to change this option on both computers before syncing the two libraries.

Step 5

Select "File -> Transfer Purchases" to download applications or other purchases from your iTunes account to each computer's iTunes library.

Step 6

Manually drag and drop song and video files from your PC to the appropriate locations on the iPod. Unless these files are in the library, you will have to sync this manually from now on. However, once the songs are on your iPod, they will stay there until you manually delete them, so you needn't drag and drop files back onto your iPod every time it syncs with the computer.

Step 7

Repeat this process with the second computer, making certain that you check the "Manually manage music and videos" option under the Summary tab. If you do not select this option on the second computer, a warning will appear notifying you that this computer's library will be synced onto the device and all other songs will be erased.
