How to Take an OtterBox Apart to Clean

By Chelsea Fitzgerald

An Otterbox is a tough, durable and attractive case useful in protecting your cell phone. Many inexpensive phone cases are available from different companies, but the Otterbox brand offers waterproof features on some designs up to a 100-feet depth, UV protection on all except the clear versions and many colors and styles to fit any phone. Taking apart the Otterbox to clean it is not an arduous task if you do it in the right order.

Things You'll Need

  • Cotton swab (optional)
  • Mild soap (optional)

Step 1

Position the Otterbox so that the screen of the cell phone is facing you.

Step 2

Slide one of the corners of the soft silicone cover off the top of the phone and then repeat on the opposite top side.

Step 3

Pull the silicone cover off the back of your phone and then off the bottom. This leaves the hard plastic Otterbox cover on your cell phone.

Step 4

Pull the prongs -- raised edges -- on the top edge of the hard plastic cover on your phone until it pops.

Step 5

Repeat the method on the side prongs, releasing them both at the same time.

Step 6

Pull the back of the hard plastic Otterbox cover off your cell phone and slide the cell phone out of the front hard plastic cover. Now you are ready to clean your Otterbox cover.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your Otterbox case tight with a cotton swab to clean dust and debris from the seals. Wash the silicone and hard plastic covers with mild soap and water and a soft cleaning cloth. Rinse the case well and dry with a towel. Allow the case to air dry for about an hour to ensure there is no moisture inside it before replacing it on your cell phone.
