How to Tell If a Wireless PC Card Is Working

By Lyan Uaha

Microsoft Windows 7/Vista allows you to easily check if a wireless PC card connected to your computer is working properly. The operating system has a builtin utility that automatically checks this and then shows you the device status message. If the wireless PC card is not properly connected to your computer then Windows will not recognize it.

Step 1

Click “Start” and then click “Control Panel.”

Step 2

Double-click the “System” icon on the Control Panel window that opens.

Step 3

Click the “Device Manager” option on the left pane of the System window that opens.

Step 4

Double-click “Network adapters” option to expand it on the Device Manager window that opens.

Step 5

Double-click your wireless PC card below Network adapters. If there is more than one adapter listed below Network adapters then look for the term “Wireless” and then double-click it. If the word "wireless" does not appear, do a Google search of the file names to determine which is the wireless adapter.

Step 6

Click the “General” tab of the properties dialog box that opens. If the wireless PC card is working properly then you will see the message “This device is working properly” below Device status.
