How to Tell If an iPhone Is Unlocked

By Jay Darrington

In the United States, iPhones are locked so that only AT&T subscribers can use them. Similar setups are present in other countries as well. However, this doesn't stop people from hacking or unlocking their iPhones so that would work on any network that can take a SIM card. Before you purchase an iPhone, however, you should make sure it is unlocked. You can do so by following a few simple steps.

Things You'll Need

  • SIM card from other network

Step 1

Open the SIM card slot located on the top of the iPhone.

Step 2

Remove the SIM card from inside the iPhone.

Step 3

Insert the replacement SIM card and close the iPhone.

Step 4

Turn on the iPhone. Wait up to two minutes, then try to place a call. If the call works, the iPhone is unlocked.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful updating an unlocked iPhone because you may end up damaging it.
